Thanksgiving in Washington D.C.

This year we were far from home for Thanksgiving. We flew to Washington D.C. to visit Dan's sister Marcia and her family. But it wasn't just us that went to see them. Dan's oldest brother and his son, his twin sister, her husband and her four kids, Dan's aunt and uncle and his parents all went too. So Marcia had quite a houseful of guests! But we all managed to find a comfortable place to sleep and had a lot of fun hanging out together.

Since we flew there, we arrived about a day and a half earlier than everyone else. Monday afternoon Ken and our nephew Blake took us to the Dulles Air and Space Museum where we saw one of the space shuttles, a concord jet, the Enola Gay (the airplane that dropped the atomic bomb on Japan), vehicles that landed on the moon, rockets, etc. Dan in particular loved it! On Tues. we went to the National Zoo which was a very fun experience for both the girls. We saw panda bears, elephants, lions, apes, etc. Chloe loved the part where we heard the male lion roaring. You could actually hear him roaring throughout the zoo. And we saw two orangutans huddled together under a sheet playing hide and seek which Lia thought was very funny.

On Wed. the whole group of us headed downtown D.C. and saw the sights. We went to the Jefferson Memorial, the WWII Memorial, the FDR Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Bureau of Printing and Engraving (we had a tour of that which was very cool). It was a LOT of walking but very interesting (probably more so for the the adults but to be expected).

Thursday we celebrated Thanksgiving and also Lia's birthday since we were all together as a family. Marcia also had a very cute craft to the girls to make which was polar fleece and ribbon pillows. Thanks to my niece Alex for making one of these pillows for Chloe to have.

Friday we went back downtown and saw more of the sights. We went to the downtown Air and Space museum and the Museum of Natural History. Unfortunately it was extremely crowded at the History museum so we didn't stay long. Then on Sat. we had a tour of the Capitol building before we left to catch our flight home. I had never been inside the Capitol building before and it was just gorgeous! And after that it was off for home. We had such a lovely trip but I have to say as always, "there's no place like home"!! : )
