Williamsburg trip

We had a great trip to Williamsburg, VA! What a fascinating place to see history come alive right before your eyes. We actually went to Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown in all. Jamestown and Yorktown both had two hour guided tours so we all learned a ton about that particular time in American history.

In Williamsburg we got to meet General George Washington and General Lafayette. We got to see Benedict Arnold giving a speech to the local people. We got to see the blacksmith and the printer working at their trades. We got to tour the Governor's mansion and see what the house looked like when it was ready for a ball. And we saw Burton Parish church and the Capital building. Oh and of course we got to visit the shops and see what kinds of clothing the colonial people wore. It was really cool!

At Jamestown we got to visit an Indian village and see how they made their longhouses, how they cooked, how the made their own weapons from using deer bones , and how they hollowed out trees to make canoes (you can see Lia trying to hollow out a burned out tree using a sea shell in one of the pics) . We also got to board three replica ships of the ships that came to Jamestown from England. It was amazing to us how small they were considering how many people they carried.

At Yorktown we visited a colonial farm and got to see the kinds of animals they had, the crops they grew (cash crop = tobacco), the kinds of houses they lived in, etc. We also saw an army encampment and heard about what life was like for soldiers in that day. We heard all about their medicinal practices (scary) and we got to see them shoot off a small canon (boy was that loud!).

It truly was an amazing trip filled with interesting history! Some of you wondered if Little Miss Chloe came with us but she didn't. It was a long drive and we didn't think she would really appreciate all the sites she would see so she stayed with Auntie Julie, Uncle Bill and Lucy and had a wonderful time just being a toddler.
